Leica SL3-S has 6K video and phase-detection autofocus

The little brother to Leica SL3 inherits professional features with the ability to film in 6K open-gate - and also gets faster autofocus.

Leica SL3 from March 2024 is the successor to SL2 released in 2019 - and now the SL3's little brother Leica SL3-S is being released, with several improvements over the Leica SL2-S from 2020.

The main new feature is the phase-detecting autofocus, inherited from the SL3, with the ability to shoot 30 frames per second with continuous autofocus on a moving object. According to Leica, the camera is the fastest they have built.

The sensor in the SL3-S is back-illuminated and has a resolution of 24 megapixels, with the ability to shoot in 48 or 96 megapixels in multishot mode.

The camera also supports the "Content Authenticity Initiative", abbreviated CAI, which in Leica's technology is called Leica Content Credentials - meaning the ability to demonstrate that an image was taken with the camera and what has been done with the image file.

For video, it is possible to film in 6K in 3:2 open-gate. The camera can also record in raw format via HDMI in 5.9K/30p to external devices. ProRes 4:2:2 HQ in 5.8K/30p or C4K/60p can be recorded on the CFexpress card, which is Type B.

Leica SL3-S can also transfer images wirelessly through wifi and MIMI technology, which allows for much faster transfer than its predecessor. The camera also supports Frame.IO.

Leica SL3-S is available now. The recommended price is 62,990 kronor including VAT.
