Nikon Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II released - sharper, lighter & video adapted

The first Z-version of the professional zoom Nikon Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 S was released in 2019. Now it's time for the successor, and according to Nikon themselves, the new version 24-70mm f/2.8 S II has a lot of improvements.

The lens has become easier to handle, partly because the lens now has internal zoom, which does not change the lens's length of 142 mm when zooming. Additionally, the new lens construction has ensured that the center of gravity is not affected when using the zoom - an improvement for filmmakers, for example. 

The weight is 675 grams, which is a reduction from the predecessor's 805 grams. This makes it the lightest 24-70mm lens so far for mirrorless full-frame cameras.

To reduce the weight, the lens has been redesigned with, among other things, double-sided aspherical lens elements and ED lens elements, and used meso-amorphous and ARNEO coatings to reduce both ghosting and lens flare.

Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 S II has also received Nikon's new Silky Swift linear motor (SSVCM), which according to Nikon means five times faster autofocus that has also become quieter. The speed is expected to be evident through focus tracking being up to 60 percent faster when zooming. At the same time, the lens loses its display that the previous version had, with information about the lens settings.

The adjustment ring closest to the mount can be set with or without clicks depending on the application or function, which suits photographers who switch between still images and video - a feature that was not present in the predecessor.

The minimum focusing distance is specified at 0.24 m (at 24mm) and 0.33 m (at 70mm). The lens also has a focus limiter, weather sealing, and a lens hood with an opening for adjusting mounted filters.

The Nikon Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II has a recommended price of 34,990 SEK including VAT. Sales start in September 2025.
