Fujifilm launches the “FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA 55” digital filmmaking camera
FUJIFILM Corporation has announced the release of the “FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA 55” (GFX ETERNA 55) worldwide. The “GFX ETERNA 55” features a large format 44 x 33 mm sensor “GFX 102MP CMOS II HS” with a diagonal of approximately 55mm, roughly 1.7 times larger than a regular full-frame 35mm sensor, enabling filmmakers to capture rich, true to life visuals and have enhanced flexibility in post-production.
The “GFX ETERNA 55” delivers rich tonal expression with high image quality and enables more diverse visual expression through our colour reproduction technology cultivated over more than 90 years since the company’s founding.
The sensor in the “GFX ETERNA 55” is the world’s tallest large-format sensor designed for filmmaking cameras. As a result, filmmakers have the flexibility to match lenses with any size image circle by selecting between the following shooting formats: “GF Open Gate 4:3”, “GF 16:9”, “Premista”, “35mm” and “Super35” without any reduction in image resolution.
The camera has a native G Mount and comes with a 1st party mount adapter “PL Mount Adapter G” expanding the range of compatible lenses, supporting filmmakers in realising their creative vision and exploring diverse visual expressions.
Internal eND: The camera boasts the world’s first electronically variable ND filter※3 compatible with larger-than-full-frame sensors, which achieves precise control, allowing seamless density adjustment from ND0.6 to ND2.1 in 0.015-step increments, or 2-7 stops in 0.1-stop increments.
OLPF: Features a new dedicated optical low-pass filter optimised for its large format sensor, adopting a four-point separation method to reduce moiré and ensure perfect colour accuracy.
Dual Base ISO: The camera has two base sensitivities, ISO 800 and ISO 3200 maximising dynamic range and ensuring clean shadows and highlight with minimal noise even when shooting in the most challenging of lighting situations.
Versatile Colour Pipelines
Film Simulation Modes: The GFX ETERNA 55 includes 20 “Film Simulation” modes, made famous by the X and GFX Series of cameras, to enable diverse visual styles. They can be used for monitoring on-set which still capturing a clean Log image, or the look can be baked into the footage for productions where speed of workflow is paramount
F Gamut C: The GFX ETERNA 55 supports both “F-Log2” and “F-Log2 C” colour spaces which both have dynamic range of 14+ stops. These allow capturing rich image tonality that take full advantage of the large format sensor, providing greater flexibility in post-production.
Film Simulation 3D LUTs: There are also 10 Film Simulation 3D-LUTs (compliant with ITU-R BT.709) for precise colour and tone adjustment of footage shot in F-Log2 and/or F-Log2 C. LUTs announced at launch include “ETERNA”, “ETERNA BLEACHBYPASS”, “PROVIA”, “Velvia,” and “ACROS” which will be available to download from Fujifilm’s website.
Customise the perfect shooting look: Up to 16 different 3D-LUTs, including Film Simulation LUTs, can be stored in the GFX ETERNA 55, enabling shooting while previewing the precise desired look.
Workflow Solutions Supporting Various Codecs and Improved Efficiency
Internal: the GFX ETERNA 55 supports Apple ProRes*4 422 HQ, Apple ProRes 422 and Apple ProRes 422 LT, as well as HEVC/H.265 and H.264. When shooting in Apple ProRes, the camera can also record Apple ProRes 422 Proxy.
External: The GFX ETERNA 55 can output 4:2:2 10bit uncompressed data and up to 8K/30P 12-bit video in RAW data via HDMI.
Direct to Cloud: The camera supports Camera to Cloud so files can be uploaded directly to Frame.io and instantly shared with editing teams, greatly enhancing the workflow efficiency from shooting to editing.
Compact and lightweight body for functionality and operability
Small and lightweight: To support small crews and solo shooting, the camera weighs approximately 2.0 kg.
Versatile control: The front of the camera and the included handle feature a multi-function dial that can can control the focus, zoom, and iris of FUJIFILM GF lenses. When the dial is set to “ND”, it allows fine adjustment of the electronically variable ND filter’s density. 3-inch monitors have been placed on both sides to allow multiple users to simultaneously adjust and check camera settings.
Bright External Monitor: A bright 5-inch external LCD monitor with up to 2000 nits clearly displays footage even when shooting outdoors in bright sunlight. The touch-enabled LCD monitor features multiple adjustable angles, and quick-access customisable Function buttons.
Power: The GFX ETERNA 55 takes power through a dedicated V-Mount battery interface and also supports an internal removable NP-W235 battery. This allows for up to 30 minutes of shooting without an external battery. When replacing the external battery, power is supplied from the NP-W235 battery, enabling “hot swap”*5 functionality without restarting the camera.
Media: The camera is equipped with dual card slots supporting CFExpress™ Type B*6 and SD cards.
